As some of you know I've been off away at college fending for myself for the past couple of months. There has been a lot of things that I've done that I have been proud about while I've been up here...
1. Go to BYU-I-do and not go on one single date for 3 months
2. Finish Friends, New Girl, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow on Netflix
3. Eat Half of the tub of ice cream and not feel sick
4. Have good grades
5. Keep my Daisy flower alive
6. Change a tampon in the woods
7. Start running again
8. Cook
I'm sure the list could go one for a little bit longer but no one really cares that much to read that. Anyways before I left for college my mom started freaking out and tried to teach me how to cook right before I left. Now before I go further I need to explain something. As a freshman in high school I took a cooking class. I loved it but would never take it again. I also loved to cook when I was little but when I grew a little more I never had time to do it. HOWEVER, somehow my sister was then believed to love cooking after she made cookies one day and my mom started buying her all of these cookbooks and recipes for her to use. So no, to answer your question I was not the favorite back then. Once my sister started being praised for cooking, even though she never did it, I started to hate it. So when it came time for college my mom for some reason thought I was incapable of cooking and feeding myself properly even though I have been capable of cooking for quite a long time. I'm pretty sure that my cooking is only thing that my mom has been wrong about (I'm the favorite child now so I have to be nice)
So this post is dedicated to you mom. I know this is probably the biggest thing you are proud of me for doing up here even though I would chose a different number.
I've cooked a lot of different things up here so I'll post some of my favorites that I've done. I hope this will help anyone else who hates cooking for survival and would much rather cook for fun and have a chef make the meals you actually have to eat.
TERIYAKI CHICKEN:
I am not sure if this is actually what it is but it sure is good. I also wish I had pictures to show you guys because everything I make is a master piece.
Ingredients:
Chicken Breast
Soy Sauce
Brown Sugar
Instructions:
1. Defrost Chicken
2. Heat up skillet on medium (not too hot)
3. Poor Soy Sauce in pan
4. Put a pinch or two of brown sugar in the soy sauce
5. Cut up the chicken in bit size pieces
6. Put the chicken in the skillet
7. Cook till it looks cooked and isn't pink
8. Eat it and think of me while you do it.
This is super easy and I either put it over top ramen or rice and it's fantastic either way
BBQ CHICKEN:
This one is a favorite because I impress all of the guys when I do it!! Thats obviously why I've been on so many dates.
Ingredients:
Chicken Breast
Lemon Pepper
Garlic Salt
BBQ Sauce
Instructions:
1. Defrost Chicken
2. Turn on grill
3. Put the lemon pepper and garlic salt over the chicken on both sides
4. Cook on the grill for 5-10 min then flip
5. Repeat step 4 for other side of chicken
(dont flip more than once to savor the juices so it isn't dry)
6. Apply BBQ sauce to one side and let it soak in for a couple of minutes on the grill
7. Make a snapchat/instagram post about it so everyone's jealous
8. Call your dad and tell him how good it is
Side Notes: This looks weird on the grill if you are only cooking for one person but if I can do it, so can you! Who needs friends when you have BBQ chicken!
RICE:
Before I left Becky (my beautiful mother) bought me this rice cooker at Big Lots for $4. BEST. PURCHASE. EVER. I definitely had my doubts about it but it has been my favorite thing ever to cook.
Ingredients:
rice
water
Instructions:
1. Poor 1 cup of rice into rice cooker
2. Poor 2 cups of water into rice cooker
3. Put rice cooker in the microwave for 12 min
4. Enjoy the best rice ever
FRENCH FRIES:
This is a must because, well I'm in Idaho the home of famous potatoes. Sometime I'm not sure if they mean the vegetable or the people because a lot of the people here look like potatoes and Sarah Palin is from Idaho so I mean she's famous and kinda looks like a potato.
Ingredients:
Potato
Olive oil
Garlic Salt
Instructions:
1. Start your oil at a boil but don't burn it because it could start boiling and set your smoke alarm off. (TRUST ME)
2. Cut up your potaters
3. Put the potatoes in the oil
4. Take them out when turned slightly darker
5. Dab them with a paper towel then replace them in the oil and let them cook till dark
6. Sprinkle spices all over them
7. Eat and enjoy
Okay so by this time I'm bored writing this and I'm sure everyone is bored reading this so I'll just sum up everything that I have learned these last couple of months
1. Garlic salt is heavenly and you can use it for anything: Food doesn't taste good? Garlic salt. Need a little more kick to your rice? Garlic salt. Bored of plain popcorn? Garlic salt. Need a social life? Garlic Salt. Basically garlic salt is the Target (BEST STORE EVER) of food; it solves any problem.
2. Don't be ashamed of buying the 80¢ pasta and mashed potatoes. They literally saved my life and 80¢ never tasted so good.
3. Lactose Free milk pretty much doesn't expire so if you don't drink a lot of milk that's the way to go!
4. Don't over cook your oil: Some official guy with a gun showed up at my door when I set the smoke detector off and he laughed at me because I burned oil... but JOKES ON YOU SIR I'm not a wanna be cop or wanna be fireman.
5. The calculator will become your best friend because cooking for one is awfully hard, either that or just get a boyfriend and always cook for him (I don't recommend the latter)
6. Experimenting recipes is good but be prepared for a lot of failure. Trust me.
7. Peanut Butter Party from Blue Bunny. is the best ice cream I have ever had up here so I recommend it 10000% even if this doesn't fall under cooking, it's food so it matters.
Okay this is such a lame post but in a couple weeks I'll be posting about my adventures in Alaska and then Fiji so my peeps stay tunes!!
I love you all
